Phijos is the catch-all alias of Philippus Johan, a smart-casual creative from Cape Town, South Africa who is an essential player in the country’s underground music and queer nightlife scene. He’s helped set up several key cultural drivers, including The Other Radio, The Other Records, SWIM, Search Festival and The Death of Glitter. Confident in the comically broad palette he’s developed over the years and picked up from these spaces he helped create, Phijos mashes up bass, italo, jungle, R&B, breaks, bounce, pop edits, house, and techno to raucous effect. It’s an energetic and audacious musical cocktail that’s not so much about the ingredients, but the garnish: a sleazy and euphoric wedge of lip-smacking queerness designed to make you dance and question your sexuality.
He's performed either as Phijos, Phijosindafield (w/ [kevindafield]), or with The Other DJs at a wide gamut of events, clubs and festivals, including SPECTRUM, Modular, Mouth2Mouth Festival, Cape Town Electronic Music Festival, Smalltown Beat Festival, The Death of Glitter and Search Festival. He was the host of two radio shows on The Other Radio and has appeared on mixes for Worldwide FM, The Other Radio, Vinyl Factory, High Hoops, Zarabat FM, Mass and Montez Press Radio.
